Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users administering products of uncertain source.

Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer laws, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Response and Content Elimination

According to the social media company, the platform has removed problematic material and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the platform safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Digital Marketplace Operations

Investigations also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with numerous of users, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.

Within minutes of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or past usage.

Within these communities, messages display dark colored parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious health risks”.
